Start Your Day With God

Have you ever thought about what your morning routine should be as a Christian? Mornings are a tough time for many of us, as we try to get dressed and ready for a day of work or school. One thing many of us have in common is that we rush through our mornings and begin with our task-oriented days. When you read through the Psalms you see the Psalmists talking about what they focus on in their mornings. “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch” (Psalm 5:3). David used his mornings to establish his connection with God for today. He says “in the morning you hear my voice.”

We are often taught when we are young to “always put God first.” Ironically, though, we struggle to put God first during the first part of our day! David prays to God in the morning so he can watch for God to act throughout his day. That’s such a joy giving concept. Imagine David’s joy when he sees the things he prayed for in the morning becoming fulfilled during the different periods of the day. Another Psalmist in Psalm 92 says, “It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning and your faithfulness by night.” This is very similar to what Jeremiah says in Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”

The morning is a time for rejoicing in what God’s love has provided us. Through him we are blessed with another day of life. Each day we grow older is just another day he has carried us past the obstacles and struggles of yesterday. Take one more example with you, when Israel lived in the wilderness the food and drink options were incredibly limited. Yet God still abundantly supplied for hundreds of thousands of his people. Every morning, the Israelites would wake up and the morning dew would be transformed into bread for them to eat. Those who collected God’s provision in the morning could have all that they wanted and were satisfied. However, once the morning passed and the sun made the earth hot, the manna wasted and rotted away.

Does your spirit feel weak and famished? Maybe it’s time to change your morning routine, and to take time to eat at God’s table.
