Often, it is easy to fall into the trap of comparison. There are few ways to rob ourselves of joy and purpose quicker than to compare our lifestyle, looks, family, or talents to that of our other brothers and sisters. When we compare then we can become discouraged, ungrateful, and envious.
In Rom 12:4–5, the Apostle Paul compares the church to a body, a comparison not uncommon in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:18). Paul highlights the differences and unique characteristics found within the various members of the body of Christ. Here are three takeaways from this small portion of Scripture.
- Do not think more highly of yourself and your abilities than you ought to, as each member’s function looks different. Despite the differences in your gifts/talents, they all serve an important purpose within the body, and all have the goal to glorify God.
- Do your part. Paul says in verse 6, “let us use them.” If your skill is teaching, then teach. If it is serving, then serve. Bless God by using the specific gifts and talents He gave to you through faith. Maybe you have tried serving in a capacity but have become discouraged or lost faith in your ability to do so. Don’t give up! Just as muscles within the body take repeated use to grow, our abilities and role within the body of Christ are the same.
- Encourage others to use their gifts as Paul does. For the body to be healthy and work productively, every different part needs to work. As our physical body is incomplete if any member is missing, so the body of Christ is incomplete if any of its members are lacking. If you know the strengths of a brother or sister who wants to get involved, encourage and help them to find the area where they can do the most good.
This passage not only reminds us of the importance of each person’s role in the church, but also encourages us: God has called us to be one with Him. As we join His body here on earth, we can rejoice that we do not have to serve alone.
